Well, all these answers will be answered and all relevant pieces of detail about this theory of relationships will be included. This blog is certainly going to be a complete guide on the same.

What is Taxi Cab Theory?

The Taxi Cab Theory suggests and promotes the idea that in actuality love has literally nothing to with commitment. In contrast, this theory claims that love is all about the timing instead of commitment and feelings. In fact, this theory also links it with a man reaching a point where he is exhausted and unwilling to go on a first date again which might turn out to be bad too. This theory has become very popular in relationships these days.

According to this theory, whenever a man feels like he is ready to settle down with someone in life. At the moment, he will go ahead and find or choose whoever is available for them. Thereafter, they will snatch that girl to settle down with here. Moreover, this theory also compares this concept with a taxi driver who picks up every next passenger while their “light is on”. Similarly, a man searching for the next available woman with their lights on. Hence, somewhere this comparison with a taxi driver kind of derived the name “Taxi Cab Theory”.

“Taxi Cab Theory” – Where did it come from?

This theory that has become a trend of its own has certainly not merged out of thin air. Well, many of you might be wondering about where did this theory come from. According to factual information, this theory originated form the 6 season long American TV series titled “Sex and The City”. Well, there is also a film with the same name but is not the one this blog refers to. Indeed, it all started in one of the episodes of Sex and The City TV series. A character named Charlotte plays an important role in this. Basically, her character is portrayed as a hopeless romantic. Also, her character is very deeply embedded in the idea of true love that it can even be compared to a kid’s affection with his/her toys. Then enters the character of Trey who is shown to be the love interest of Charlotte.

The origin of the “Taxi Cab Theory”

In the narrative, Charlotte says “Sometimes you just know, it’s like, magic, it’s fate.” She says so after it has been two weeks since she first met Trey. And, now Trey is Charlotte’s soon to be husband. Now, a character named Miranda Hobbs, a lawyer makes a statement which originated this taxi cab theory. She replies to Charlotte by saying that it is not actually fate and it is just that Trey’s light is on. Ending her initial dialogue by saying “that’s all” adding assurance to it. The she continues by claiming that men individuals are like cabs.

While doing this comparison she exactly says that whenever men are ‘available’ their ‘light happens to go on’. And, flash very brightly too. She adds that they just wake up one day and make the decision of settling down and starting a family along with having babies. That is when men turn their lights on according to her. Lastly, she concludes this theory by saying that the next woman they come across, find available and pick up is going to be the one they are going to marry. She also uses the phrase “boom” at the end of her dialogue just before saying that it is not actually simple fate but just dumb luck. To be more specific, this theory originated in the 3rd episode of the 3rd season of Sex and the City. Also, it was back in the month of July in 2000.

The actual context of the hyped “Taxi Cab Theory”

This theory has managed to earn a lot of relevance and popularity indeed. Especially on social media platform such as TikTok, Instagram, etc. Without all the complexities and in simple words, this theory states that one day suddenly a man decides after waking up that they should get serious about marriage. And, actually decide to marry the next woman that they catch with their bright lights. Hence, settling down with the first woman they start dating after this realisation in their head. The point that this theory is trying to make is that a man’s decision of who he is going to marry relies more on chance rather than actual feelings of love. Also, according to this theory when or if a relationship ends/fails, it is nobody’s fault. Therefore, claiming that it is actually how men are in real life. On the other hand, this theory has also stated that a man might date the perfect woman but still not come around to marrying her. All because they are just not ready to commit themselves to marriage at the moment.
